The redevelopment of the ‘brownfield’ site for its new intended use began with the preparation of a project that included: investigating building materials suspected of being dangerous; verifying that the industrial refrigeration system did not contain toxic gases; inspecting both underground and above-ground tanks, with particular attention paid to the course of the sewerage network. The soil characterization plan was submitted to public authorities. Before demolishing the buildings, the asbestos used as insulation in the cold rooms and on the pipes was removed. The recovery of metals such as steel and copper proved to be economically significant.
The soil remediation project was prepared following an ‘ordinary’; procedure with two distinct phases. In the area corresponding to phase ‘A’; the achievement of the tabular threshold values, known as CSC, was expected.
While for phase “B” which corresponds to the site of a building, the maximum CSR values were calculated.
